From the Santana 30/30
Brochure
The Santana 30/30 is the W.D. Schock
Corporation's newest 30 footer designed by the naval architect team of
Bruce Nelson and Bruce Marek whose famous 1/4 tonner BLIVIT and STARS AND
STRIPES are known world wide.
The Santana 30/30 is being built in the same
one-design tradition as all Schock products. Designed to the M.O.R.C.
rule, the Santana 30/30 is an extremely large 30 footer. Coupled with its
huge masthead rig, the latest Santana will be an awesome performer in all
wind and sea conditions.
The interior locates all heavy components near
the boat's center of gravity so as to keep the ends of the boat light for
the racer and performance cruiser. The interior is also beautifully
finished and extremely comfortable for distance sailing. There are three
extra large sleeping areas of which the forward v-berth and the two aft
king-size quarter berths can accommodate 6 adults. A navigator's station,
large L-shaped galley and long dinette table make this expansive interior
functional and flexible.
Hull
The hull is one piece 100% hand laid-up
fiberglass utilizing alternating layers of fiberglass matt and fiberglass
woven roving to achieve superior strength and maximum rigidity for its
weight. Each layer of fiberglass is hand saturated with resin thus
insuring the highest strength to weight ratio. Areas where excess loads
occur, such as in the chainplates and mast step are reinforced with
additional layer of fiberglass.
Superior keel strength is accomplished by the
installation of hardwood floor timbers which are bonded to the hull to
carry the load of the keel throughout the hull.
Tremendous hull strength is further achieved
by the addition of a one piece hull pan which is bonded with fiberglass
wherever the hull pan touches the hull. This hull pan becomes the sole for
the interior of the boat which in turn is bonded to the deck thus making
for the entire boat being a monocoque of one piece
construction.
High gloss gelcoat is used and all accent
stripes are molded in. All through-hull fittings below the waterline are
flush with the hull and have shutoff valves.
Keel
The keel is constructed of cast lead. It is
attached to the hull with eight ½ inch stainless steel keel bolts.
Rudder
The extremely large and powerful balanced
rudder is placed well aft for good control. It is constructed with a very
large steel backbone and stainless steel shaft. The blade itself is high
density foam encased in a fiberglass shell. The rudder head is cast brass
with a solid oak tiller.
Deck and Deck Hardware
The deck is 100% hand laid-up fiberglass with
a balsa wood core to give it maximum strength in the lightest possible
structure. Marine grade plywood and additional layers of fiberglass are
used to reinforce areas where deck hardware is placed.
The deck layout, with its wide side decks,
large foredeck, and roomy cockpit meets the needs of both the racing crew
and the family cruiser. An attractive non-skid pattern covers the deck,
the cockpit seats and the cabin sole to provide sure footing. The flush
mounted plexiglass forward hatch is oversized to facilitate sail handling
both in and out of the boat's interior. Along with the seahood which
covers the main hatch, both entry points into the hull are
watertight.
Winching platforms offer a unique extension of
the cockpit and cockpit coaming. The winches are well inboard so cross
sheeting can be accomplished with ease. Aft of the platforms are
conventional bench seats which are comfortable for racing maneuvers as
well as for cruising.
The hardware on board has been will thought
out for quality and durability. The package includes two genoa sheet
winches, tow spinnaker sheet winches, tow halyard winches, tow sets of
halyard stoppers and fairleads and blocks for all sheets and halyards. All
halyards exit the mast and then go to the base of the mast where they lead
aft to the respective winches. A roller bearing mainsheet traveller with
control lines is recessed in the cockpit seats. The stemhead fitting is
stainless steel and has two genoa tack horns. The anodized aluminum
toerail doubles as a hull/deck strengthener and since it has preventer
holes every few inches, it can accommodate the preventer-boon vang,
headsail leads, mooring lines, etc.
Spars and Rigging
The very tall two-spreader masthead rig
features a tri-halyard sheave box system for headsail/spinnaker handling
efficiency. All halyards are internal and lead aft and are rope-to-wire
splices. The mash which comes complete with spinnaker equipment is tapered
to reduce weight and windage aloft. Both the mast and boom are aluminium
with a glossy white pain finish.
The boom comes with and outhaul system which
incorporates the combination outhaul/flattner reef via an adjustment line.
There are two internal reefs that have lock-offs at the gooseneck. The
standing rigging is solid stainless steel rod.
A boom vang/preventer, and a plastic conduit
for mast wiring complete the mast package.
Propulsion
The Santana 30/30 is powered by the Volvo
Penta MD 7A 13 HP, 2 cylinder, 4 stroke marine diesel engine. The raw
water cooling system is thermostatically controlled. The reverse reduction
gear is also raw water cooled. The fuel system consists of an injection
pump with a hydraulic governor. The engine has an automatic cold starting
system. A 12 volt electrical system with complete instrument panel is
provided. The panel has a key switch and warning lights for batter
charging, water temperature and oil pressure.
Tankage
Thirty to forty hours of cruising is provided
by a fuel tank of approximately 20 gallons. The water tank holds
approximately 20 gallons also with a second 20 gallon water tank an
option. Both the fuel and water tanks are deck filled with the fuel tank
made of aluminum and the water tank of rigid plastic.
Electrical
A heavy gauge, 12 volt ships electrical system
is provided along with two heavy duty 12 volt batteries. A master
electrical control panel is conveniently located in the navigation
station.
Interior
At first glance the Santana 30/30 has an
expansive interior handsomely appointed with oiled teak bulkheads and
cabinetry, teak and holly cabin sole, cane faced doors and zippered vinyl
headliner.
The private 6 foot plus forward stateroom is
conventional in layout, with a long v-berth and a chainlocker bulkhead
forward. The berths are hinged at the hull and lift for easy access to the
sail bin below. This bunk/sail bin combinations was very successfully used
on the original Santana 30 and the presently produced New York
36.
Just aft of this stateroom is a beautifully
finished enclosed head compartment with a large hanging locker above and
in back of the head. The marine head has a holding tank and a Y-valve so
that the holding tank can be bypassed. The holding tank has a deck pump
out fitting.
Across from the marine head and hanging locker
is a stainless steel sink with white formica countertop alone with some
shelf storage. The main cabin features a galley equipped with a two burner
stove, a large ice chest, a stainless steel sink with a foot-operated
double action water pump and plenty of storage. The counter is covered
with durable white formica. Opposite the galley is a navigator's statio
complete with lift tip table, ample storage, shelving space and
comfortable seating.
Aft of the navigator's station and the galley
are two "king size" 6 feet 6 inch quarter berths such as those built into
the Santana 35.
Designer's Comments
Designed to maximize performance under the
M.O.R.C. rule, the Santana 30/30, our first design under this rule
reflects several months of research.
This 30 footer is an extremely large boat with
long, powerful lines that are free of the bumps and hollows associated
with an IOR design. These long, fair lines will allow this boat to handle
assuredly in even the most severe conditions.
The deck layout became a reality after many
meetings with the W.D. Schock Corp. and local M.O.R.C. racers. The deck is
both functional and large with special attention paid to the sheeting
angles and spreader lengths of the large masthead rig.
The interior space combines the features of
the Schock's successful Santana 35 and New York 36 with three large
sleeping areas for three couples along with full amenities such as an
L-shapes galley, navigator's station. dinette table, enclosed head and
hanging locker. The interior will be attractively finished with oiled teak
bulkheads and trim, teak and holly cabin sole and zippered vinyl
headliner.
The entire cabin is abundant with storage
space. Large storage bins are located just outboard of seating areas in
and across from the dinette area. These "lockers: are readily accessible
behind the seat and back cushions. While racing these "lockers" may be
assigned to individual crew for organizational purposes.
