SANTANA 22

Standard Description

HULL

The hull is one piece and is 100% hand laid up fiberglass.  It is engineered and built to yield maximum strength and rigidity, with reinforcement in areas where large loads may be exerted.  High gloss white gel coat is used.

KEEL & RUDDER

The keel is 1230 lbs. of cast iron, cast in a modified bulb style, classic and dependable.  Eight stainless steel keel bolts are used to bolt the fin to the hull.  The unique design of the keel offers maximum stability and minimum drag. The rudder is constructed of laminated fiberglass and high-density filler with a schedule 80 tubular stainless steel shaft.  The tiller is varnished wood and is mounted on the cockpit sole.

DECK

The hand-laid deck is made of end grain balsa sandwiched between fiberglass. The reinforcement in critical load areas consists of either additional fiberglass laminates or plywood. The deck incorporates the latest in design ideas and materials while maintaining the classic look and feel of the original Santana 22 design.  The cockpit coaming is one piece and is molded to the deck.  The windows are mounted flush to the cabin sides and are tinted acrylic.  The walking areas are covered with a slip-resistant diamond pattern non-skid. Colored lines are provided for easy identification. Optional handrails can be mounted on the cabin house.

The 8-foot long cockpit has a molded backrest and large opening seat hatches for access to spacious storage lockers. The lazarette is equipped with a fiberglass gas tank shelf and is well ventilated.

DECK HARDWARE

The deck hardware on the Santana 22 is set up to minimize effort for maximum sail control.  The jib is trimmed from winches located on top of the cabin. The jib lead tracks are also located on the cabin top. The jib halyard is trimmed with a third winch and cleat located on the cabin top. The optional bridge deck puts all sail control lines within easy reach for the crew. All deck hardware is Harken. The traveler has a movable car with cam cleats for adjustments on either tack.  The skipper trims the main sheet with a combination ratchet block and cam cleat swivel mounted on a Barney post.  No matter where the skipper sets the traveler car, the main sheet is trimmed from the Barney post. The Santana 22 is also equipped with a mast hinge for easier raising and lowering of the mast.

SPARS AND RIGGING

The aluminum mast is held in place by Rigger's Choice 1 x 19 stainless steel rigging and turnbuckles.  The mast is a single spreader rig to cut down on weight and windage. The main and jib halyards are internal. The aluminum boom has an internal outhaul and a bail for the boom vang.  The mainsheet attaches at the end of the boom for maximum control.  A fixed gooseneck is attached to the boom. Colored lines are provided for easy identification.

INTERIOR

The interior accommodations are amazingly spacious for a boat of 22 feet.  The boat has a natural teak interior structure that is warm and inviting.  This one-piece structure includes the forward berth, mid-ship berth and cabin sole.  It is fiberglass-bonded to the hull along the topsides and the bottom of the boat, giving the hull tremendous strength.  The main bulkhead is fastened to the interior structure and fiberglass bonded to the hull and deck.

Backrests in the main cabin make sitting below comfortable and have the added advantage of providing retainers for sea bags, etc.  The forward V-berth is over six feet long and capable of accommodating two adults.  The two mid-ship bunks are eight feet long and over two feet wide.  Interior cushions are included as standard. There is space available for an optional self-contained portable toilet in the forward part of the cabin.  Natural teak and holly is used for the main cabin floorboard.  An ice chest that doubles as a step is provided.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The standard electrical system includes three cabin lights, Coast Guard-certified running lights, a 12-volt battery, and a switch and distribution panel.
