Strict one design class rules place the emphasis on the skill of the skipper and crew. For this reason, many Olympic-caliber sailors have been attracted to the class.

At the same time, boats sailed by couples and family members continue to be extremely competitive.

In most class events the Lido class is divided into two fleets to offer fair competition for all entrants.
