A Stunning Harbor 20 with Wood
Trim
A Newport Beach Harbor 20 owner with a passion for
classic sailboats recently personalized his Harbor 20 by having us
change the hull color from white to dark blue. We also added wood
accents to add warmth and elegance.
Although the owner loves wood, he also loves the way the Harbor 20
sails, and he still wants to be able to race one-design. So adding
hundreds of extra pounds wasn’t an option. In the end, we were able to
combine the best of all worlds. We added only 45 pounds, the boat is
still class legal, and it is as beautiful as any wooden boat in the
harbor.
As you can see from the photos, the wood treatment included adding teak
cuddy and cockpit coaming trim, teak and holly floorboards, a teak
transom, teak console trim, and teak gunwale wrap. We also wrapped the
barney post with teak veneer and wrapped the mast, boom, and jib boom
with spruce. The wood was coated in epoxy and then clear coated with
two-part varnish. The result is a deep lustrous finish that glistens at
the dock and, more importantly, while sailing up the bay.
The boat is stunning and looks like a classic wooden daysailer.
